Next are a couple reflections that have zero intensity (and, therefore, don't appear in the list of observed reflections). Here the 100 set of planes has just the same number and kind of atoms directly in the planes as just halfway between the planes. Since these “interplanar” atoms would produce diffracted rays exactly out of phase with those produced by the atoms directly in the Bragg planes, the expected reflection intensity is zero.
